What is coaching?

According to Michael K. Simpson, "Coaching is about finding and growing the potential of individuals to achieve goals important to them and to their organization.

Coaching is based on the assumption that everyone can grow and that everyone has the potential to become something better, regardless of the point of departure."

How important is coaching in leading individuals, teams, and organizations?

Personally, I find this skill very valuable in the overall health of every organization. Unfortunately, mentoring individuals and teams have been neglected most of the time.

"A team that is highly engaged has double the chance of job performance and success. Engaged workers are more productive, profitable, loyal, and customer focused. Most importantly, the research also shows that an immediate manager has the most profound influence on an employee’s level of engagement." - [source]

How can you be an effective coach?

The 7 essential coaching skills to effectively coach people to unlock potential are: building trust, challenge paradigms, seek strategic clarity, execute flawlessly, tap into talent, move the middle. I won't be expounding each of these skills here. You'll have to read Unlocking Potential: 7 Coaching Skills That Transform Individuals, Teams, and Organizations by Michael K. Simpson to find it out yourself.

3 Golden Nuggets from Unlocking Potential Book

  • Instead of lecturing, ask questions. As a coach, your task is to help individuals shift paradigms that limit their progress. You can do this by questioning those inaccurate or limiting paradigms.
  • As a coach, if I tell people what to do and how to do it, it becomes my responsibility, not theirs, whether it works or not. Individuals don’t take ownership of commitments that doesn’t belong to them.
  • When an individual gives a rationale for opinions and assumptions, dig into that reasoning rather than assume it as a given fact.

Unlocking Potential Book Review

Overall, Unlocking Potential: 7 Coaching Skills That Transform Individuals, Teams, and Organizations by Michael K. Simpson is a practical and beneficial book for managers, leaders and aspiring-to-be leaders in every organization. I've rated the book 3 stars over 5 because I find some of the points to be a bit repetitive. It's like constantly reading the same thing all over again.

But make no mistake, this book has many useful insights on the subject of coaching. In fact, I'll be using some of the strategies mentioned in the book to coach/mentor our soon-to-be-children. Pretty neat!

RATING: 3/5

Yes, I would recommend this book: Unlocking Potential: 7 Coaching Skills That Transform Individuals, Teams, and Organizations by Michael K. Simpson to managers, leaders and aspiring-to-be leaders. Oh, be sure to take note of those important techniques and strategies mentioned. It'll be very useful for future reference. ;)
